* You are a private individual

1. As the person responsible for a dog involved in a (bite) incident, you can request behavioural support from the Behaviour Team led by Prof. Dr. Haverbeke, or from a qualified animal behaviour professional.

2. Victim ot the (bite) incident

2.a Was your pet bitten?

  • Have the injuries treated by a veterinarian.
  • Report the incident to the police (dangerous / stray animals).
  • Consider behavioural support from a professional to help your animal overcome potential fear and/or (possible) aggression resulting from this negative experience.
  • Gather information: take photos of the injuries – note the contact details of all parties involved and describe the events – preferably record the details of the incident while memories are still fresh (e.g. context of the incident and preceding behaviour; trigger of the bite; frequency and location of bites; did the dog stop on its own; what happened afterward; behaviour of the dog, the owner, and the victim).

2.b Have you been bitten?

  • Have the injuries treated by a medical doctor.
  • Report the incident to the police (dangerous / stray animals).
  • Gather information: take photos of the injuries – note the contact details of all parties involved and describe the events – preferably record the details of the incident while memories are still fresh (e.g. context of the incident and preceding behaviour; trigger of the bite; frequency and location of bites; did the dog stop on its own; what happened afterward; behaviour of the dog, the owner, and the victim).

* You are a professional in the animal sector

* You are a government official

  • In the event of a bite incident > you can request advice and/or a risk assessment
  • In the event of another type of incident (neglect, abuse) > consult the Flemish government website
