Nutrition for Horses (vet)

Horse owners can come to us for professional nutritional advice, both for healthy horses and those with medical conditions where nutrition plays a crucial role in treatment.

For horses with health problems, we always work in consultation with the referring vet. Optimal dietary advice depends on the results of clinical examination and additional tests.

We therefore ask you to give this information to the owner or forward it in advance to dienstpaardenvoeding@ugent.be.

In some cases, such as obesity, diet is the only treatment. In other situations, an appropriate ration is an essential part of the medical approach. Combining medical therapy with correct diet significantly increases the chances of successful treatment. We also pay attention to prevention, for example in horses at increased risk of colic.

When can you refer a patient to us?

You can refer a healthy or sick horse to us for nutritional advice when:

โœ” You cannot find an appropriate dietary solution.
โœ” You do not have the time to answer all the owner's nutrition-related questions.

We are happy to take this task off your hands, so you will see a satisfied owner afterwards.

What can you expect from us?

A partnership with our service saves you as a vet valuable time, while the owner receives independent, individual and science-based nutritional advice.

๐Ÿ’ก Our veterinary nutritionists work under the guidance of two European animal nutrition specialists (ECVCN Diplomates).

๐Ÿ” What we do:

  • Compare commercial feeds and supplements.
  • Contact manufacturers if necessary.
  • Prepare a tailor-made diet plan (concentrate, roughage, supplements and nutritional management).
  • Perform necessary calculations for optimal rations.
  • Answering all the owner's nutritional questions.
  • Assist in the interpretation of roughage analyses.

๐Ÿ“Œ Follow-up can be done in consultation with you and the owner, either with us or at your practice.
