OCD or osteochondrosis dissecans

Osteochondrosis dissecans (OCD) is a condition in which there is a disruption in the conversion of cartilage to bone. This creates a thick cartilage zone in the joint that is no longer adequately supplied with blood. That zone dies off and forms a loose cartilage flap in the joint. In some rare cases, this loose flap can become bony.

The condition frequently occurs at the age of 5 to 6 months and is often seen in conjunction with medial coronoid disease. The symptoms are therefore comparable to those of this condition.

The diagnosis of OCD of the elbow can usually be made on the basis of X-rays. Arthroscopy can be used to confirm the diagnosis and then remove the cartilage flap.
