In the case of patellar luxation or kneecap dislocation, the kneecap does not remain in its normal position but moves to the inside or outside of the knee. This often causes pain and withdrawal of the hind leg.
Treatment usually consists of a combination of different techniques, whereby attempts are made to return the kneecap to its original position and keep it there by deepening the patellar groove, moving the tibial tuberosity and tightening the joint capsule.
More recently, an implant (RidgeStop®) has also become available that can help to keep the kneecap in place in certain cases. If this is necessary, we will discuss it with you during the consultation.
Screening
Patellar luxation is a genetically determined condition. This means that it is passed on from parent animals to their puppies. That is why it is important that sensitive breeds are screened for this condition. We can also carry out official checks for patellar luxation as part of our breeding advice service.
